Getting arrested just so you can have a meal

There was a news story in the media here in DK recently about something slightly similar. The number of Romanian people who get arrested on purpose here is growing rapidly. They come to DK, do the silliest of criminal stuff and end up behind bars which they describe as a 'five star hotel' compared to prison life in their home country. They can't believe they get paid for being in prison here and send the money back home, which in Romania equals a month and a half wages, despite being a pretty low amount here. The news on the telly interviewed people who had only come here with that in mind and because they had been told how easy it is. They don't mind doing something criminal and being put away for a bit when the benefits are larger than what they could have had at home doing a normal job. It is a sad situation on several levels but the saddest part to me is that there are people out there who are in situations so dire that they actually do this scheme. It cannot be their first choice, surely. They must be desperate in ways most of us hopefully never will experience.

Reporting is lousy these days, what benefits is he on? Jobseekers? Sickness benefits?
Why did the benefits stop?
Why did they not refer him to a food bank or for a hardship loan?
Why cant he sell something so he can eat short term?

If he is on jobseekers, personally If I worked at the jobcenter I would give him a jobseekers direction to stop looking like a twat with that stupid hair and stop his benefits if he didnt comply. Perhaps that is what happened...

I tried to get a free breakfast from Ipswich police station once. Walked in at 4am after a stoppy back in the local (which was owned by a Sunderland lad), had a SAFC scarf pulled onto my head, tried to pull the wpc on the desk and got offered a cell...for 24hrs minimum. Thought about it but bottled it in the end and went on my merry way mumbling about shearer being a wanker.
