Zero to Hero?

Nyron would be my shout not only because he meets the OP's criteria but because the crowd taking to him lifted his game to enable him for some time to play at a level beyond his perceived level.
Larsson not a quirky hero like Nyron but for me been an intelligent footballer both on and off the ball.

Nyron being the most obvious one, I would agree... he was a bit of a joke figure and turned into a pretty solid defender, at least at Championship level. Loved him me like.

Bardsley definitely improved in his time here, although he was always seen as solid. A lot of people wrote off Wickham, Henderson & Colback and they all turned good to some extent, at least. Not sure Cattermole counts as much, certainly he is held in higher esteem now but I just think people underrated him from the start... when he first signed, he was excellent.

Bramble maybe? He was decent right from when he first signed but was written off by a lot of people when he first signed, including me. I guess the same could be said for the likes of Rose & Mannone, even Borini.


Nyron definitely had the biggest transformation though. Vergini didn't have that many bad games but certainly got a lot of abuse following his performances at Arsenal & Spurs (I think it was Spurs), while most people like him now.
 
Jozy. One of those occasional plAyers who is so shite but keeps on plugging that if he does come good he will be a hero

Eric Gates.
Bought by Mackem Enemy and part of the team that made the most disastrous contribution to SAFC history (even if he did get a few goals)
Perfect foil for the immortal Gabbers in our resurrection season.

PS: I am ignoring the OP's 10 year remit, as so many others on here are doing. Some of us have long memories and are not afraid to use them!
