We all know that England play waaaay too many test matches but still the morning after a test ends i wake up excited about the days play then realise it has finished. I find myself thinking why can't they play more test matches?

No such thing as a happy medium is there?
Agree!

Get shot of ODI's and have MORE test cricket!
This. The simplest solutions are usually the best ones.

Something I've wondered whether they should do, since there's such a clamour for the Ashes at the moment and we usually bolt a 2 test series against one of the smaller teams onto the start of the summer, why not do away with that and extend the Ashes series and have it as a 7 test series lasting the whole summer, the demand is there, 7 grounds would get Ashes tests and the series would probably be better with more chance for changes of momentum over a longer series.

Nah, this is a bad idea. If you do this then you are effectively saying 'The Ashes is the only Test series that really matters and England and Australia get priority and extra money because of this'. You then end up pushing other nations away from Test cricket, which is exactly what we don't want.

Problem is one day matches are a lot more popular round the world than Tests. It is only really England, and possibly Australia that tests are still the main format.

Agree with the OP, I am a bit sick of this "they play too much" stuff that is brought up by the media all the time, I agree that there is no way we should of had back to back Ashes, but they are well paid sportsman.

Nope. Just limit ODI series to 3 or 5 games.

Nah, no need for it. Tests for cricket fans, and T20 for those who like rounders.

If ODI's were binned Im sure Test attendances would increase.

International t20 hasn't taken off like people thought it would. Attendances for the last t20 world cup were awful and besides no one is going to pay £40 in this country anyway to watch an England V India t20 when they could see an ODI for £50.

Fair point, but test cricket did work back in the days when one side would tour the country for the whole summer playing just one test series. This is effectively a return to that idea in Ashes years, because regardless of the fairness of it, the Ashes is still the biggest prize in cricket, so it becomes a tougher contest as a result. If the extra tests came at the expense of the endless pyjama cricket that is played, I'm sure it would be wholeheartedly embraced by the majority. After all, we've got a whole winter of pyjama cricket tedium with no proper cricket at all, so why not have a whole summer of proper cricket.

Disagree

Just play it less frequently

It's the ashes again next year ffs

I'd like to see eight test matches - Two series of either 4 & 4 or 3 & 5 tests, Lord's gets 2, The Oval 1 with the remaining 5 being allocated to the rest on a rota basis. That way the 7 other test grounds are competing for 5 tests so each ground will be guaranteed at least one test every two years.

India prefer the one day stuff, so we have no say in it unfortunately.

All the focus is on the test team, and rightly so, but one of the main challenges we face is building a quality ODI side.

i know the feeling, its like a come down. just watched a bit of highlights from the 2010/2011 ashes and the hairs stood up when tremlett blasted out mitchel johnson first ball at sydney.

still durham are on sky next tuesday and there are four t20s to tide me over
