Anybody entering this 10k? http://runmiddlesbrough.com/index.aspx?articleid=4539

Having caught the running bug recently, I'm contemplating entering an event before the year ends but I'm also a little apprehensive. If you've seen my posts you'll know that 10 weeks ago I couldn't run to the end of the street but now I'm capable of a sub-24 minute 5K. My running now is concentrating on bettering that time and I'm doing intervals on a Monday, a slow, long run on a Wednesday then a straight 5K on a Friday. My longest ever run is 5.2 miles last Wednesday, which I did in 46.10. I should have just done the extra mile to make it 10K but I was just making the route up as I went and ended up back home after 5.2 miles. I know I could have done that extra mile at the same pace, which would have given me a 10K time of around 55 mins. If I entered this race and added a mile a week to my Wednesday run, I should, hopefully, have a 1o miler under my belt. As it stands, I know I could, but have never completed 10K.

So, would anybody like to offer me any advice or encouragement? Would you enter it if you were a novice like me? The course looks pretty flat and is popular for PB, so I'm thinking this can be the benchmark by which all my future runs are set because I plan to enter quite a few events next year.

I would get in there mate. You will love it and it will make you want to run even more.

Thanks for the advice @Daydream Believer and @keeps21 - much appreciated.

I'd completely forgotten that you could change the voice feedback interval settings on Map My Run. I might experiment with that.

I'm hoping to get to a Park Run soon as I always mean to get round to it, but I really want to get a longer distance under my belt first.

Nee bother.

I only discovered you could do it when I pressed the wrong button the other day.

Woo hoo. 7 miles this evening and no side effects from my knee/calf. No time to wait before ramping up the training so full steam ahead now!

Just ran my first ever 10k in 55.20. Just wanted to make sure I could do it before I sign up for that race in Middlesbrough. It's weird, my longest ever run before tonight was 5.2 miles, and having done that tonight, I felt like I could have went much further, maybe even half marathon distance.
Going to sign up for this now

Well done. Canny difference between 10k and a half, but dare say with a bit more training you'd get there.

For me, off to a wedding tomorrow and too many beers no doubt. Need to find the time for two runs ... Hopefully get to 25 miles or so in total.

ran this 10k a couple of times and it's the flattest 10k around.

Maybe I was getting ahead of myself, I have no idea what it takes to run a half marathon, but there was definitely many more miles in the tank.

Good to hear.

Looks like I'm gonna be doing the Kielder 10k in October too with a lad from work.
Are there many runs to enter over the winter?

17 mile today. Was hard work on an undulating route and hadn't done almost anything in the last couple of weeks. Felt it on the last 3 miles! Managed to hold to 7:20 pace so now just a matter of keeping that speed and adding more miles. Easy!

Had a check on my progress so far this year and I'm currently on 450 miles which considering I was hardly running up until about 6 weeks ago isn't too bad. I'm aiming to get to 1000 for the year, past few years I've been just short in the 800s but I'm determined to stick in and get my target this year. I'm really looking forward to the GNR and Keilder as well. Feel like it's been ages since I was in a race with having to pull out of the two ultras I entered this year.

Try the Saltwell park 10k, a week or so before Xmas.
Weather can be a bit rough and the hills are harsh, but its a well organised event.

I done this in 2012, my 2nd ever 10k but the first was the Stampede, so the Saltwell one was really my 1st 10k proper, pretty hilly and it was lashing down but sadistically I really enjoyed it

Done Park run this morning, I can't get my head around morning running, never got out of 2nd gear, so sluggish.
