Poyet on Wickham

I really hope we get him signed. I have a feeling if we let him go now because we can't tie him down it will bite us in the arse.

I can see him getting that footballing nastiness in him this season and becoming the player he was touted to be 3 years ago when we signed him.

Hope you're right. I have doubts about this lad and I hope I'm wrong.

This was a bad signing for us from the start. We paid way too much for an unproven young lad and it was inevitable that one of three things would happen; plays great and therefore attracts interest from 'big clubs' and moves on probably at the end of the contract and we lose money, disappoints and stays on the wage bill for the full time of his contract without ever contributing and we lose money,or, isn't given enough game time and refuses to sign a new deal and we lose money.

We are not a club of enough stature to be paying big money for unproven talent/potential sadly that is for the CL teams who are adept at signing lots of this type and then still making money from them.

Good to see the club learning from its recent mistakes regarding contacts expiring. However it's a step backwards getting rid of players who are on the verge of stepping up a level and really kicking on after we've invested so much time and effort in to them. Being pragmatic though, it's probably the right thing to say.

IMO he's been tapped up and is going to sit it out.
More likely his agent. To be fair the lad doesn't seem the brightest star in the sky and his agent will no doubt be touting him about.

I'm just not sure about him-flashes of really good play but a lot of utter dross from him too. Were those handful of games a flash in the pan or the sign of more to come. Who knows?

Either way, Poyet is right. If you want to stay and be part of what he's trying to do then sign your contract. If not, fuck off.

I think he's been mishandled by the club, some of it may be down to his attitude, who knows?

But the kid scored 5 in 6 at the end of last season, and deserves a chance IMHO.

Even if he doesn't sign a contract, I'd still give him a chance, he might do excellent if he's putting himself in the shop window. That might bump up the compensation, if not he's not the first player we've f@cked up on financially
4 managers have mishandled him ?
1 or even 2 I could understand, but 4 seems to me the lad needs to take a long hard look.

I just think he's one of those that needs to be made to feel like the main man, the end of last season will have made him feel like that even more.

Obviously he has this lifestyle of some only way is Essex tart like but i just judge him on his football and that run last year he showed what he has so that needs bringing out more.

Poyet needs to stop spouting off so publicly, there's times you do it and situations you do it, this isn't one of them.

A simple, talks are ongoing line would have done

He's been messed about his entire time here. He had more loans than Wonga last season, then we're in the shit, Gus is starting to make his excuses and leave, says we need a miracle and then up pops Wickham to save the day. Aye, let's put a gun to the fucker's head now, who does he think he is.

Unbelievably poor man management. This will be the side of Poyet that managed us right into the shit last year.

Wickham is the one player in that squad that owes SAFC the square root of fuck all.

Given that his goals basically saved our Premiership status last season and that you would expect him to be a key and improving asset for us over the next 3 years, you can see why he'd be after a substantial pay hike.

That may be 'ungrateful' etc. but he doesn't have any ties to the area and the club didn't really give him a run in the side until extreme desperation gave them no option. .

Not this shite again

40 appearances, 6 goals, and most at the end of the season gone.
It can never be proven but I doubt if he was available on the open market ( no tribunals ) , we'd be lucky to get half our fee back, and other than a bittom 6 club I don't know if there'd be real interest in the premier league.

I agree with Congerton playing hardball with the players over contracts. However, I think Connor is probably being advised correctly. He's a young improving English goal scorer and tbh they should be taking our eyes out....

Well my memory of the season is that we were dead and buried after the Spurs game and safe a month later..mainly through Wickham doing what Altidore couldn't, namely sticking the ball in the back of the net, in those critical games.

Gus needs to remember he's only on a two year contract himself so can't really dictate the clubs transfer policy, which is Congertons area anyway. Needs to shut the fuck up.

yeh get rid of fletcher too it makes financial sense

He won't sign either?

He's shite anyway

His contract tells him to keep out of the transfers?

Hence why I said "on the verge". He's far from the finished article.

When he gets asked about transfers he keeps mentioning that this is Congertons area. Usually at the end of a rant about lack of signings, mind. I've no idea what's in his contract as you well know.

Horseplop. He's the one who's messed about. When he arrived he couldn't get interested in the training for looking at his bank statement and planning his spending. The loans were because he needed to play and, frankly,he just wasn't up to the task with us. He did finally have a bright spot at the end of last season, when he took his goals well, but a cameo performance like that isn't enough to convince his head is right for the possible career ahead. In my mind,he's earned a chance to put the last 3 years behind him and concentrate on being a top class striker with the team who have taken a chance and signed him for a lot of money and are prepared to make him a millionaire beyond his dreams. To think that his goals during last season's run in alone entitles him to huge increases in the terms of his deal is mad.

If we try to sell him and he turns down the move, then that's what has probably happened.

I remember when Reidy took a hard line stance with Bridges and Johnston when they refused to sign new contracts, he had them training with the kids and said unless you sign you don't kick another ball for us.
I didn't like at first but I think he was right. We ended up getting £5m for Bridges but Johnston sat it out for a year and left on a free but his career was never the same again, a year without competitive football knackered him.
Be careful Connor.
