Alonso adapting to new role at Fiorentina

Oh. Playing a decent standard of football for 25 years and watching sunderland for over 40 years and I've fallen for it?

If you read the post properly I said I liked him but he can't defend. The only reason we were ever in for him was simply his price tag and/or the possibility of getting another plodder off our books.

It is defiantly not because of his extreme talent. However, I wouldn't have been unhappy with him signing as he puts effort in and is sometimes decent. Make a good left midfielder.
Stats don't lie have u read al alonos?

People have made up their mind he's a bad defender and wont be swayed.
Just like Fletcher is a druggie, a drunk and a tramp to others
Also betdner was lazy and kenwyne which is bollocks!

Yes, they lie. I like him and want us to sign him, but to say he was the best LB in the league is ridiculous.
How do they lie your saying he can't defend the stats say he made most blocks and tackles that indicates he can defend

He is a limited defender. Would make a good substitute.
How the fuck is he limited! Hes statistically one of the best left backs last season

Can't win as a fullback these days u can only be in one place at a time you are all ways going to be caught out of position now and again when u are expected to get forward so much that's why cattermole and bridcut sit deep to move across the back 4 and cover people

Few points to note on this thread.

Regarding people saying fletcher is... This is totally irresponsible to cast a public slanging of a footballer. fLetcher we have SEEN to be an excellent goal scorer. When his form dipped for whatever reason, some comments on here were disgraceful.

BEST LEFT BACK.
Statistically he maybe. Statistics do not make a football team unless you are looking at the table, which is all that matters.
I'll ask you this. It is obvious that the left back position is a difficult position to fill, so how come if he is the best defender in the league then the starting price is 3 million, and Luke shaw is 25 million plus?

Again, I have seen every game Alonso has player in. He has a heart and passion, something which DESPITE footballing skills endears player to the Sunderland faithful aka Bardsley (pre twitter nightclub incident) Collins, Noseworthy, Kay, Ball, Kabuchi ET al.

Again. I wouldn't be too unhappy t see his return. He is a limited defender, but as someone else posted, we are a limited team.

Prepare for some glaring errors.

Our new fullback Van Aanholt was in the 30 for the Dutch team, which Alonso wouldn't get near. No need for him now.
We don't know that much about him yet to say for certain he's better than Alonso. And we still need another LB, we can't play Giaccherini there if van Aarnholt gets injured.

With this in mind, Alonso becomes more valuable to us if he has been identified as central defender. Could challenge Brown/O'Shea for a starting place and provide cover at LB.
Fits more in to the plan now than he ever has.

I quite like Alonso - he has several fine qualities - but he lacks any form of explosive pace and that's something you really need for the Prem. Much rather have a fit Danny Rose for that reason.

Canny player. Would have liked us to sign him but like others have said we can definitely get better and hopefully we have. As for him playing CB, he'll do alright imo, his pace wont be exposed as much, and despite what some say he can tackle, intercept and block. As part of a back 3/5 it might work better for him.

we have such a terrible recent record of playing makeshift LBs that any real LBs who get a few games look good and become legends. Is Justin Hoyte still playing ?

just googled him : lost most of his hair ! was just a kid when he ran out for us ..distinctly remember his getting gradually worse with each game as we pulled him down to our level

We talking about Hoyte or Alonso here?

I thought Hoyte was fairly crap.

This, I felt really sorry for him. He came to us to get games just as Arsenal had the worst injury run for a long time with their right full backs but they couldn't recall him. I went to the Arsenal v Watford game the next season and he got a really warm round of applause when he came on then looked like a fish out of water, the worse thing was people weren't getting annoyed at him they were kind of sympathising with him. Like Angeleri for us! We really stripped him of all his confidence!
