Haha, I'm not Scottish in the slightest, just live here, so stereotype all you want. Though the Mrs is Scottish and she spends money like it's going out of fashion so unfortunately it's not very accurate.
I just didn't really get your point. They were all players that turned out to be worth the decent sum of money that was paid for them was my point and they looked just as good in the premier league as they did up here. Not every signing from the spl is a boumsong or a hooper.

I fully agree.....but we seem to be getting away from my initial point which was in response to another poster stating that van Dijk was a "great" player. I just mentioned that label couldn't be applied to him as things stand given where he's plied his trade so far. That doesn't mean he won't be a great player in the fullness of time but at this moment in time caution needs to be exercised when fees in the region of £10m are bandied about......

A 10m fee plus a minimum 2m per year wages equates to 16m over 3 years.. and that's a minimum. If he's rubbish that's a lot of money. If he's a star maybe we get our money back and profit
Who is going to be dropped...JoS or Brown? As a pair they do very very well. Yes they make the odd 'horror..but they all do at every club.
I believe both have a year at least left in them. I'd prefer 10m be spent on a quality creative MF player with pace

Signing on fee is normally the equivalent of a years salary but spread over the life of the contract so that's another £2m.......£18m.......we really have to be sure he has the ability to take the step up to the PL in his stride before we can contemplate laying that kind of money out.

I think I 'undercooked' the wages btw. 2m pa would be an absolute minimum and don't they get the club to the tax for them these days?

Fair point, don't know if he's great. But he might be, which you can't say about most players were linked with.

Don't think the problem is that neither are good enough. The issue is they're both old and injury prone, at the moment if one is injured we're screwed. I think a top class centre half should be priority now.

Got to agree with that. Nothing wrong with Brown and JOS as a partnership but we'd be asking for trouble if we expect both of them to remain fit all season. Not strengthening would also put us in a position where we have no CB's at the end of the season when their contracts are up.

What's he been like in the Champions League? We should use that as the stick to measure his performances as the standard in Scotland is so poor. Get him in, Rodwell, the Onion, Borini and Wickham signed up and ill get a full chubby on.

I think we need that as well as the CB though. If Borini doesn't come there should be almost £10m that hasn't therefore been allocated (if the rumoured £4m for Rodriguez is accurate) and that should go on a quality CM......but not at the expense of a quality CB.

Either/or imo.....

Coasted it according to me mate. Even when he spent half his time covering for Ambrose's mistakes

Both Brown and O'Shea will need replacing by next summer
