SAFC - is it ever going to work?

we've hit our level, that's all.
two freak good positions spoiled us and for some, that meant its where we should be, despite evidence to the contrary. Once football became a rich mans game we had no chance.

That's a very honest and reasonable assessment. I think those of us who tend to have a bit moan about things do it because we tend to shoot ourselves in the foot a lot of the time.........sometimes you just know a decision is wrong, or a series of decisions like last summer and its frustrating to watch it pan out over the season. The biggest mistake they could make now is in passing off Poyet....he looks as though he could be a decent manager but he will need to be backed.

GP wouldn't have taken the job without some assurances..he had options at the time so used them in his bargaining is my guess.
I suspect that GP is indeed frustrated but not so much by the club, but the way the deals pan out in the premier league.
His experience with Brighton could never have prepared him for what he is encountering.
Bigger money, bigger egos, 1000 x the scrutiny.
The Borini thing must be especially frustrating but I don't believe the club has done anything wrong.
We wouldn't have offered the money etc unless we had a good idea that he wanted it and would sign. That's what agents are for.
Liverpool and Borini ( imo ) are digging their heels in , and as I've speculated before, I believe it centres around pay off and contractual stuff.
People are going to be disappointed I reckon. I envisage a hefty loan entourage which always sends many into paroxysms of indignation, but it is what it is..imo

a. we don't have a sugar daddy like city or chelsea
b. we don't have the history of arsenal, Liverpool or united

Look at all the other clubs, why are we so behind in your estimation?
Soton have been back in the big boys league 5 minutes , have just sold off half their team but many on here are casting envious glances. I remain unconvinced by them especially since the owner ( old man Liebherr ) died, Cortese did one as did Pochettino. The new owner doesnt like football and wants her money back. Prior to this season, they spent 70m net once back in the premier over 2 seasons. People talk about their academy but that is a shit load of money for a club with a so called midas touch with in house talent.

Up until Ashley arrived , no team was more profligate than NUFC, now they are a 'model' of transfer prudence.
Swansea are falling apart, WHU for years have been wasting money and still do in my opinion. Aston Villa are on their last legs..Senderos and Joe Cole FFS.
QPR..ooh wow there's a role model! Leicester and Burnley..who cares. Same goes for palace and WBA
Wigan, Bolton, Fulham, Pompey, Brum, Leeds have all fallen by the wayside.
If I could compare us with anyone it would be stoke, and even they right now are going for belt tightening. The money they paid for Crouch ( given his age and zero resale value ) was criminal. They are scratting around the bargain bins right now. Bojan, the perennial loan failure and football choker is their 'enviable ' recruit..do me a favour.
I just don't get the childish indignation exhibited by so many posters and it increases every window. Utterly pathetic.

Yes you're a safc supporter so of course you will be one eyed at what is going on, but a cursory look around and a smattering of grey matter usage will demonstrate we're nowhere near as bad as you make out.
ES is now laying the foundations for us being self sustaining after years of waste and big money injections.
Excellent post sir.

Yes I expect dogs abuse for this but tbh, have we really moved forward in the last 20 years? The same old questions seem to dog us year in year out - Why are we such poor operators in the transfer market? Why do we always leave it too late? Why do we struggle to attract talent? This shit has gone on for decades yet our attendances dictate that we should be a top 8 team - so just what the fuck is the problem and why the hell has'nt it been addressed before now? I personally suspect an anti-competitive culture of just making do and a severe lack of ambition.

Sick of threads like this. We are in the North East, specifically Sunderland. That's why we can't attract, then retain, top talent-FACT, an unpalatable and upsetting fact for those of us who love it up here, but a fact nonetheless. We are massively behind a majority of clubs in sheer financial clout, so with our smaller budgets, coupled with having to pay higher wages to get good players up here, our total squad budgets are WAY less than most teams with comparable support. We are in the Premiership, easily the most competitive league in the world and, despite relegation fights, are still here, something 1000's of professional clubs can only dream about and 100's aspire to. Yes it's frustrating, disappointing and at times utterly f***ing enraging. But we are Sunderland. We are Premiership. We endure.

Team for opening game '94/'95 (away to Bristol City in the Endsleigh League Division 1) was:

Norman

Kubicki, Bennett, Melville, Gray (Martin)

Owers, Ball, Ferguson, Gray (Michael)

Goodman, Gray (Phil)

Team for opening game '14/'15 (away to West Brom in the Barclays Premier League)) will be:

Who knows?

I prefer to wait and see before passing judgement but I'll take our position/current squad now against that of 20 years ago.
I'd take Goodman and Gray up top like, two canny players in their day.

You forgot to factor in match costs. We still charge less than most, so need our bigger gates just to come close to matching their matchday income.

True...but's there's so many factors that could be listed to counter OP opinion as I've just got up I couldn't be arsed lol.

The club have tried everything but Man City levels of spending you boring twat. Go and support someone else.

spot on

For all the mistakes I can't see how anyone can doubt we've moved forward in the past 20 years.
Problem is a lot of them are bairns and they want immediate gratification and if it's not there now, it never has been or will be and they want to know why and they want it fixed.
About as much realism and plausibility as ShieldsBalckCat losing his cherry to Charlize Theron

The above is pretty much spot on.

I think what the OP is getting at is the hope we can't stand.
We have all the ingredients now just about to be reckonised as a top club unwaiving support, top class stadium & academy.
Frustration is seeing the likes of Boro signing Ravanelli, Juniniho, Emerson & The Mags with Shearer, Ginola, Cabaye etc over the years.

Maybe we were spoiled with the 2 x 7th place finishes but why shouldn't we be aiming for top 10 every year let's remember we support one of the most successful clubs in England 6 League Titles & 2 FA Cups (should be more) & I don't care most of this happened years ago WE did it
Sunderland AFC the club we all back to the hilt.

All I'm getting at is if you aim for the stars you might well get there one day but if you aim for the floor you will always stay there!

No it isn't ever going to work, lets just pack it all in. People need to understand that in this day and age we are there to make up the numbers, one of many teams whose aim is to stay in the Premier League. Possibly now and again having a cup run with a glimmer of hope of European football through the back door. It's the way it is, just accept it and you'll feel so much better for it

The mags had some fleeting success but the reality is their ambition was almost their undoing. That Ashley didn't do a Due Diligence before he bought the club from the robber barons is bewildering because they would have gone under. They made zillions out of the club and left a mountain of debt, no assets and humungous long term liabilities. They won nothing, but they beat Barca and they still want to dine out on that
As for boro...who would you rather have supported over the past 20 years?

I know I've said this before on threads but between 1970 and 1996 we spent SEVEN seasons in the top flight! SEVEN FFS! Unfortunately coinciding with my youth! Since 1996 we have spent 13 out of 18 in the top flight. I would say that was huge progress.

We don't have a divine right to top 8 football just because we get good attendances. Also, i'm sure most of your complaints can be applied to most football teams- recruiting badly, not progressing etc.
