Took the bairn there today for and Easter egg hunt

Whilst there we did a tour of the house. Upon arriving on the top landing an old guy behind us stated that he was born in the house back when it was a residential series of properties and that a the recess to our left which had a curtain pulled across it was were the Washington family kept there slaves

Anybody know if the old codger was out of his box or was spot on

like a slave cupboard?

In effect a slave attic
The old guy basically said they weren't allowed out unless they had work to be done, once completed back in the attic

Never really occurred to me that slavery was an issue up here
ive not been there. didn't the family have plantations and land in the Caribbean etc? wonder if any of them stayed on in Washington or did they all get shipped back

Never heard of it before. The Washington family moved out in the early 1600's. The old bloke must've been born before 1936 as the building was declared unfit for habitation then. No-one has lived in the hall since.

Washingtons family did use slaves in the tobacco trade but that was in Virginia.

Probably an urban Weshy myth, although quite a few North East ports were involved in the slave trade not just Bristol and Liverpoooool.
