Very much depends what you want!
Something which is highly customisable but not as nice to use = android. Also remember with android it may take you a year or more to get the "latest" version due to their pathetic rollout rules and operator involvement.
Something which is a lot more restricted but runs smoother and has a lot more support = iOS
Both are brilliant for their own reasons. What would be ideal is a hybrid of the two!
For iOS try the iPhone 5s - it's brilliant but then the iPhone 6 is due in a few months...
For android - the htc one m8 will take some beating.
