The league starts on Saturday. With regards to the Durham players who are on the fringes of the first team from what i have heard
Rammy Singh - Benwell Hill
Paul Coughlin - Whitburn
Graeme Clark - Newcastle
Andy Ireland - Tynemouth.

Not aware if any clubs have made any overseas signings, anybody heard anything.

Stuart Poynter-Brandon. Ryan Buckley-Blaydon. Josh Bousfield-Stockton.
Usman Arshad-Sunderland. Ryan Pringle-Hetton Lyons. Max Morley-Chester-Le-Street.
James Weighell-Stokesley.

It'll be interesting too see how Max Morley fayre's. Briefly hit the headlines last season after some excellent spin bowling displays. Good pitch at Ropery Lane that may give him some assistance.

Is this lad from the Academy? I went to watch the Academy play at Gateshead Fell two years ago and if this is who I think it is - he came in number three and got about 90 in 10 overs without playing one loose shot. I've never seen a local player time the ball so effortlessly.

Looked on the website for this weekends fixtures and noticed a NEPL Mini League First Division..... Any idea what that's all about??

Has Muchall signed for anyone, played for South Shields last few years with his brother, but they got relegated and i believe his brother has moved clubs, would be a cracking signing at this level especially if he still bowls.

It is a shambles is what it is!!

The First Division is still 2 teams short, so has 4 fixtures less. The Premier League has a requirement for it's teams to play a certain number of games to meet ECB targets for participation levels of its teams.

As a result they have created a "mini league" with 2 sections. No final or anything just 4 games that nobody is particularly interested in playing.

I suppose they will do instead of friendlies to get warmed up, but surely they could have come up with a better structure than they have to get some genuine competition going.

I think he is at Shields again although not 100% so apologies if that's not quite correct

Ah right, excellently explained! Cheers. Suppose on the brightside teams will just see it as good practice for the real competition starting off.

Always thought it weird and unfair how the NEPL works you could have 2 teams going neck and neck for the league,

Durham might not have a game near end of season and one of Durham's best players could play for another team against one of the top two and very easily be a match winner, which is surely unfair as that player would probably not have played against their rivals.

Every team can sign Durham players though so its not like its an unequal system. The teams at the top might be there because they've had their fringe Durham players available for more games throughout.

Besides, its the highest level of club cricket you want to be playing against the best possible players.

Yeah I know every team can sign Durham players, point is they only play from time to time and make a massive difference when they do play, one team could be lucky and hardly play against a durham player depending on fixtures where another team might play teams quite regularly with a Durham player that is hardly fair.

You are right the top teams might be there because their Durham players might have been available more, that is unfair also.

Of course you want to play against best possible players but only if it is fair all round and everybody has to play against these players, the system does not allow this therefore in my opinion it dilutes the completion and is purely there to suit the county.

Works pretty well IMO. Every team has the opportunity to try and sign which Durham player they think will benefit them most, and the amount of games they will be available for will be a factor in the decision.

It was refreshing last season that someone other than South North or Chester won the league for the first time in 10 years. The fact that Stockton had 3 Durham players in their team made the league more competitive.

Fair enough mate, just seems like league can be won on luck rather than ability

Its all about getting your team sorted and balanced before the start of the season. South North over the past decade have won a few leagues without even bothering with a Durham player ( this season i believe they have signed Karl Turner instead).
Sunderland have made the decision to to sign Arshad and early doors it looks like they will see very little of him, but they must have known that when they signed him.
Also some clubs have a much bigger budget than others and they are normally at the top of the league year in year out.

A lot like the county championship in reality, lose a few key players to meaningless A team squads, or have your opponents England players playing their one CC game a season against you could be all down to luck too.

Just checked this to confirm, and apparently it isn't 2 leagues, just 1. Each team only plays 4 games though (randomly drawn).

I was told yesterday at the Durham game by a lad who watched CLS CC regularly that CLS CC dont have as much money this year and wages for players has been reduced. Something to do with last years Ashes according to him where the commercial things that they got involved in didnt work out. Anyone else heard this?

I'd imagine not having their ground for half of last season hit them in the pocket a fair bit. I wouldn't be surprised if hiring Maiden Castle cost them around £3k and then you factor in the lack of income coming through the bar at this time too with no cricket on.

They've let one of their paid players go this season, I know that.
