this is my main issue with it. You're against the clock doing often complex lifts, there is the danger of form slipping. That said, the coaches where I do it are pretty good and burpee fines are dished out for bad form.

Exactly and that's good to hear too about where you train.

The concept of crossfit is going to attract extremists and wherever there are extremists willing to chuck their money around, there'll be an idiot there willing to snap their hands off.

Was that on T-Nation? I've seen a couple he's done like that. I just like how Rippetoe is basically stuck in his ways and will troll anyone whose life doesn't solely revolve around squatting.

I can't recall but I will try and dig it out.

Aye

I don't agree with everything Ripptoe says, but he's bang on with a lot of stuff and has been around for f***ing years

Goes without saying that if you can't correctly squat or deadlift, then there's no way you should be attempting to catch a barbell above your head. There's certainly worse places for beginners than his Starting Strength to learn the fundamentals.

Just doing an "on ramp" at a crossfit gym in Durham. Seems like a decent set up. All the lifts and techniques are demonstrated and practised with lengths of poly pipe. Hand positions are marked on the pipes and explanations of feet and body positions are given for each lift. I have wondered what it will be like once the WOD's get under way and I'm interested to see if form goes out of the window or trying to push too much weight becomes as issue (not from me of course - other people ;)
I'm doing it to improve my fitness, build core strength and flexibility for triathlon so hopefully I can keep a lid on it, practise good form and stay injury free.

I tried it for a month. On ramp all good, some WODs were good, but some were too technical and heavy for beginners. The problem I had with it is that there were that many techniques to master and unless you devote a lot of time to it (which I can't) then you don't seem to really go anywhere. Each to their own, I think the aim of CrossFit is great, but it needs a place where the beginners are given good classes to get into all the different skills required. I went back to running and started the Stronglifts routine which to be honest I prefer. What I did notice that there were some strong people who do not look like they could lift what they did or the amount of pull ups etc !!

Exactly my point, walk into an ordinary gym, and the vast majority, even a lot of those who lift reguarly will not be able to perfom a normal back squat. They are too used to the standard bodybuilder type workout/split mainly focussing on upper body development which is why you see so many quarter squats/squats on the Smith Machine, but even the ones who can won't even necessarilly have the flexibility to manage something like an overhead squat, which also requires a degree of technical skill, regardless of how strong they are. Add on how the modern gym goer tends to prefer lat pulldowns to pull-ups - never mind a muscle up or some of the more complicated gymnastics moves - and who prefer tricep kickbacks to deadlifts, it would certainly leave me with the impression that even someone who trains five times a week in most cases would probably benefit from classes/corrective training/some form of periodisation before starting a programme of Crossfit's nature, nevermind a beginner.

Jacana? I'll no doubt see you there

Yes Jacana. On ramp finished yesterday and first WOD done today. Nothing to technical today but I need to work on my oly skills and upper body strength, having mostly run and cycled for the last few years.
Did you do a taster session on Monday night with lee howe? Or are you the older lad who did the on ramp?

Did my taster last Saturday. Yes I'm am the owld git who was doing the on ramp. The younguns couldn't keep up though ;)
Broken man today. Hero WOD - Rx'd it and still buzzing.

You seen the WOD today? Thankfully I'm busy

Be a few sore backs tomorrow morning.

I never really enjoyed going to the gym doing my own thing but really enjoy doing crossfit. Lots of variation so never get bored of it and decent craic in the classes.

Got physio tonight (thank God). Saw the picture on facebook of my mates lass doing it, looks like she's doing long division as well. Loads of numbers chalked on the floor next to her
Did you do the on ramp about 9 -10 weeks ago. My mate john said you might have been on the same one as him. Said there was a git big lad called Ross, so I assume it was you?

If it's the john who has got his missus going now he seems like a spot on lad

In two minds whether or not to go tonight. Got a dodgy knee and thats a silly amount of squats.
