LVCC - Northants v Durham

Going off the commentary and the scores so far it seems like a good pitch still. The outfield is like lightning and runs have flowed pretty much around 4 an over in Days 2 and 3.

It's pretty difficult to call without being there. It'll be interesting to see whether Colly targets a specific score or perhaps just a specific time. Whether or not he wants to dangle the carrot for Northants by tempting them to go for the runs.

From my vast experience of First Class captaincy (on International Cricket Captain ) I'd like to see us give ourselves a go before Lunch. A tricky little 12 overs or so with the new ball. If you can pick up 1/2 then you're in the game. That scenario would give you around 78 overs which you could turn into a few more overs if you bowl the spinners for long periods during the afternoon. Obviously if you're going for runs you slow it down and bowl only the minimum.

For that idea you'd probably want no less than 330 - but on this pitch, with runs so far flowing quite well that figure may be higher.

Normally you'd back yourselves 99 out of a hundred to defend 300 on Day 4, but it'll be in the back of Colly's mind that it's still a good pitch.

You'd rather be in our position but how the lads play it from here is anyone's guess. What we want is for it to start turning, but according to the comms there's no real sign of that yet. Middlebrook's wickets were more attributed to our lads forcing the issue rather than massive turn.

Perhaps tomorrow is the day for Scotty to send a message to the England selectors. Here's hoping.
In a sense it's good our main strike bowlers have managed only 1 wicket between them. Still strength in depth in the bowling

Try and get to 350 as soon as possible tomorrow, you've got to play the situation and not worry about things like the Yorkshire game last season, that was a freak result.
On the subject of yorks, slight chance they could lose after scoring 450 1st up

I agree you have to play the situation

I agree Mike to a degree. Quite a large degree. I'd be tempted to just go out and smash it straight away, get to 320 lead within an hour (about 10 overs if it comes off) and then have about 82(+) at them. Be positive and aggressive and really go at them.

It's just that all the reports I've read indicate the pitch is still as flat as a fart.

Disappointing seeing Colly go when his sole purpose was to keep their wicket at that point. Still, a canny innings, hopefully we go out with intent tomorrow. I would like another 100 before declaring mind (if we can get it in say 15 overs)

I think it's good that he was showing the intent to get a score quickly and set up a chance of a win tomorrow. I'd much rather we have a captain who took that aggressive approach to the game than someone who was willing to sit back and make sure we don't get beat. England set up take note...

320-330 lead. They don't have a Root in the line up that can take the game away in the 4th innings.

I missed the last four overs but the way they were talking on the commentary sounded as though we'd started to think about protecting our wickets. Apologies if untrue.

I was just going by Collingwood's strike rate throughout his innings, I've no idea how it ebbed and flowed

This. Colly smashed Crook and Middlebrook about early on but then with about 5 overs left he and Richardson had seemingly dropped anchor to start again tomorrow.

Managed to listen to some of the commentary today sounds like a good competative match on an excellent first class pitch, where batsmen can play their shots with confidence and bowlers have to put the ball in the right areas or they are canon fodder.
Could be a big day for Borthwick today, he was spinning it in the first innings but kept bowling a four ball per over.

Yeah spot on

I think Colly will go for it tomorrow, apart from his leadership and personal qualities last year, one of the main reasons we won the title last year was due to his innovative form of attacking captaincy.

Imagine we will bat until half 12 setting them 370 then have 20 minutes at them before lunch

All this is dependent on us not getting skittled mind.

Has he ever done anything other than that though?

Usually expensive but won the match at he Oval last season on the final day, and was important in Yorkshires second innings at Scarbrough probably the results that won Durham the title.

Interesting days play ahead, I still think anything more than 320 with less than 70-75 overs left and they won't go for it. Despite what seems like a free scoring pitch, the average run rate for the game is only slightly over 3.5 rpo. Durham's current innings is the highest run rate at 3.9 but we've lost 5 wkts achieving it. It's a pitch where scoring runs isn't hard, but scoring quickly without losing wickets is a lot harder.

I'd like to see a 350 run lead with maybe 10-15 overs before lunch at them and then two full sessions where Borthwick and Breese will surely come into play.

P.S
Big Luke (Evans) has been popping in during the game, he sends his regards to everyone up North. He says the wicket is expected to break up on the final day, especially with the sun out and higher temps expected today.

Good news if true about the pitch. Is Big Luke still on the staff down there? If so, anywhere near the first team??

Anything above 300 and I think they'll have very half hearted ambitions about a chase

What better than to start with a competitive draw against the champions?

No, Luke's working in a bank at the moment but hoping to 'land' a job as a commercial pilot eventually, let's hope his flying career 'takes off'.

Very slow going. 15 overs gone today and only 33 added. Fuck knows what they're playing at.
Strange isn't it? Maybe they've decided to make sure they use up enough overs first so that Northants would have to risk swinging the bat to win it.

Just tuned in, how very disappointing that we've only put on 50 runs this morning.

Seem to just be wasting time to mean northants will have to come out swinging if they want to win.

Why we didn't just have a real go set them 350 with a bit of time before lunch to have a bowl.

Breese gone, we have to just throw the bat at it now. Nowt to lose when just shy of a 300 lead.
