And without irony, I heard someone say it's the wettest drought since records began!

By definition, a drought is a deficit of rainfall over an defined period. There are 3 types of defined 'drought'

1. Meteorological
2. Agricultural
3. Hydrological

What is being talked about at the moment is a Hydrological Drought

For example, if, in the last year, rainfall is 20% below normal and that normal is 30 ins of rain per annum, then there is a shortfall of 6 ins. This means to catch up, we'll need this amount more rain than is normal, just to stand still. However, between April and October, it becomes difficult to replenish ground water supplies as most rain that falls is evaporated back without reaching underground reserves.

So, even if the summer months (June-August) get twice their normal rainfall (making up the 6" deficit, a very wet summer), only a small percentage will reach underground storage, so won't make a huge dent in the deficit. Most of the heavy rain that has fallen recently will just 'disappear' back into the atmosphere, or run off to the sea.

Therefore, we can have surface flooding, but still have a hydrological drought.

Tin hat on here...

In the north east we have no water shortage. We have a far better leakage performance than a lot of other regions.
Meters are always an option to only pay for what you use.

BUT one question I ask, what does everyone think is a fair price to pay to have safe clean water and more importantly have your own shit taken away? Personally I think water companies are pretty good compared to other utilities.

Is that not because of Kielder? IIRC it could never rain on the north east for a year and there'd still be no water shortage, because of Kielder.

Now we see it was privatised without thought...nee water down the south..
Did they think 100 year old pipes would be up to scratch ...although they are having a dabble at replacing them...
They'll not be building any reservoirs in a hurry....even ours at Kielder had a purpose to supply industry in Teeside..
The latest thing to come out is meters on every household etc...and you've gotta pay £200 towards it somehow....the idea is to try to cut usage by 10%.
Its a lot cheaper hoying a meter in...than digging up the country trying to fix leaks...

Yep, that's right. Barry siddall can run his taps as much as he wants and we'll be okay. It's nice to us getting something positive out of the north south divide!

Abberton reservoir in east Anglia has just been extended which should help the turnip munchers once it fills up.

Isn't there plans kicking about for new reservoirs in Wales to help serve the south?

It is - just washing the car now and flushing the toilet even though I haven't even had a wee or poo

One of our toilets is meant to use less water, problem is it takes two flushes to get of a decent log.

3 baths 2 showers 18 flushes of the bog washed car/kitchen floor and had the sprinkler on all day

Got loads of water me like
