Make no mistake about it there will be an additional cost to the consumer for this somewhere along the line. You can see it coming a mile off.

the free market in certain circumstances just doesnt work and water seems like one of those industries that should be renationalised because the water companies have upped the costs substantially for no apparent customer gain in service.

certainly is an argument for water to be nationalised as is the argument that all homes and properties shoudl be metered...

pay what you use... you do it for every other utility..

I don't disagree. the increased cost of electricity and gas has made me switch lights off in our house etc. and as a result my utility bill has gone down by £7 per month. not a lot but it shows you that when you are made aware that your actions have a cost to you then it makes you think.

Same with water. If I had a choice of how much to use v the cost of how much I use then it would undoubtedly have an effect on the way I used water.

if its yellow let it mellow..
if its brown flush it down.

it does make you think about it... little things such as not leaving tap runnign when brushing teeth.

I dont' scimp on water int hat dishwasher, mashing machien are constanlty on and 4 in the hosue but metered still comes in less than it would be if I was paying water rates for 4 bed house

1. Wrong kind of water falling.
2. It's the bankers fault

1. Thats what the water companies will say, probably.
2. They are getting blamed for everything else these days.

What do they do in hot countries to ensure everyone has water? I dont ever recall seeing stand-pipes around the streets of Madrid, Seville or Valencia during the very long hot summers.

Its a bloody national disgrace that an generally wet island like this cannot get its act together.

Agreed. We no longer have competent people making the decisions. Everything is driven by money and not service. It needs to be the other way around.

WTF have you got on your finger ends?

Tin hat on here...

In the north east we have no water shortage. We have a far better leakage performance than a lot of other regions.

Meters are always an option to only pay for what you use.

BUT one question I ask, what does everyone think is a fair price to pay to have safe clean water and more importantly have your own shit taken away? Personally I think water companies are pretty good compared to other utilities.

the problem is that no one knows what a fair price is. I have no comparison as to what other companies charge and what they give in return.

the Government should set a national scale of charges for water and regulate it in that way rather than leaving it to the free market to rip people off.

I'm not advocating government interference in everything but where there is a clear imperative then I think it is required.

They were saying on the TV it's because it's been pretty dry for so long that the ground has gone dry and hard, so the water isn't soaking into it and making it's way to where it needs to be.

And without irony, I heard someone say it's the wettest drought since records began!

Put it another way, water companies don't exist and you have to collect your own water, battling with the neighbours to get to the supply. You then have to clean it and get it back to your house. Your house has got a corner full of the families shit that you have to get rid of somehow on a regular basis.

One day someone turns up and says give me x amount of money and I'll give you a supply of fresh clean water and I'll take your shit away without any hassle at all...how much would you offer them?

only cold water I hope... dont' want your gas bill up for all that hot water...

that washer in your tap downstairs .. can you take it out.. I liek the sound of dripping

washer removed - just flushed me toilet again (nee wee or poo)

I couldn't walk round the park for all the puddles yesterday and now they are talking standpipes on the radio. But building round here is going amok, I can see there being not enough water for use, nor pipes to sort the waste. Crazy world.

I thought this was not a possibility until next year, and even then only if next winter is as dry as the last two.
