Players visit local hospitals

Sunderland's players were full of holiday spirit today as the entire squad split up to visit local hospitals in Sunderland and Durham.

The Black Cats stopped by the children's wards at the Sunderland Royal Hospital and the University Hospital of North Durham in two groups, along with manager Mick McCarthy.

They spent an hour at each, signing autographs and bringing best wishes to the children for the Christmas holidays.

Michael Bridges, who was at the Sunderland Royal, said: "A lot of these kids will not get out for Christmas and if we can help them in any way the visit is worthwhile. It puts a reality check on things. If we can bring a smile to their faces for a day it

"Being able to put a smile on a child's face is just as good as winning a football game. A few of them have asked for three points against Leeds for Christmas. We said we'll do our best."

McCarthy, Sunderland's manager, visited the hospital in Durham. He said: "It's really a worthwhile thing. A lot of these children are in hospital not feeling too good and if we can put a smile on one or two of their faces it's great.

"It makes their day when they see their favourite players walk in. A few of them asked for three points on Boxing Day. Their parents did at least!"

Gary Breen said: "The lads really do look forward to visiting the hospitals and meeting the youngsters - it's great to see the smiles on the childrens faces when we hand out gifts."

"Being in hospital is never fun, especially for children and even less
so at Christmas time so hopefully our visits will help to cheer up the
youngsters and their families."

Players had their pictures taken with children and gave out posters, autographs and training cards.
