Caldwell red card overturned

Sunderland AFC today confirmed that the red card shown to Steven Caldwell in Saturday's Coca Cola Championship clash with West Ham United has been rescinded by the Football Association.

The defender was dismissed for an alleged incident with West Ham's Luke Chadwick, however, following an appeal by the Club, backed up by video evidence, the Football Association have overturned the referees decision and declared it a 'wrongful dismissal'.

Commenting on the FA ruling, Black Cats manager Mick McCarthy said:

"Of course I'm delighted that we will have Steven available for the busy Christmas period, there's a lot of games in short space of time and we'll need our full squad.

"He is an honest lad and always maintained his innocence from the outset. I would like to thank the FA for taking the time to consider our evidence and I am pleased that common sense has prevailed in this instance."
