Breen commits future to Sunderland

Sunderland AFC today confirmed that Republic of Ireland international Gary Breen has signed a new one-year contract, with an option of a further year.

The influential defender, who has made over 50 appearance for Sunderland, joined the Black Cats in August 2003 from West Ham United in a two-year deal, which was due to expire in June 2005.

Gary has been capped 61 times by the Republic of Ireland and was made Sunderland Club Captain at the start of this season.

Manager Mick McCarthy said: "Everyone knows how highly I rate Breeny, I think he has been my most influential signing. Not only is he a quality defender, but he's a great leader on and off the field and brings a tremendous amount of experience to our side.

"Young defenders such as Neill Collins, Steve Caldwell and Danny Collins can learn a huge amount from someone of Gary's ability and experience and I'm delighted he's committed his future to us."

Gary Breen added: "I'm delighted the deal is done and I can continue to focus on getting us promoted. Since I've been here the fans have been fantastic to me and hopefully by committing my future to the Club I can repay their faith in me."
