McAteer makes Prenton Park debut

Former skipper Jason McAteer has made his Tranmere Rovers debut in a scoreless draw against Spanish Primera League side Racing Santander.

McAteer was told at the end of last season that his contract at Sunderland wouldn't be renewed and he could leave on a free transfer; a planned move to Leicester City fell through but he signed for Brian Little's side last week and was named skipper.

McAteer had predicted a tough game for his new team, saying "We will certainly be pushed. They beat Real Madrid at their place last season and anyone in the top division of their country will provide a challenge, no matter what division you're in.

Over 5,000 Rovers supporters watched the game, and Trigger rounded off his evening by picking up the Man of the Match award.
