Whitley signs new deal

Sunderland AFC today completed the signing of midfielder Jeff Whitley as the 25-year old put pen to paper to complete a one-year deal which will commence immediately.

Whitley proved to be a valuable member of Mick McCarthy's squad last season, making 42 first team appearances.

Mick McCarthy commented on the Northern Ireland international saying: "Jeff was my most improved player last season. His work rate was excellent and his attitude first class. Overall he had a great season."

Jeff added: "Mick has been magnificent for me in giving me my chance and believing in me and I thank him for that. I'm really delighted things have been finalised. Hopefully we'll have a great season ahead of us and I'm looking forward to being part of it."
