Youngster signs new contract

Richie Ryan has signed a new one-year deal that will keep him at the Club until at least June 2005.

Richie joined Sunderland in 2001 and made his Premiership debut against Newcastle in April 2003, doing enough to earn a second appearance against Arsenal in the final game of the season.

The 2003-04 season, however, has proved to be frustrating for the Irishman, having played only a handful of games due to a hip injury.

Ryan commented on his new contract saying: “Playing for Sunderland has been really good for me, I joined as a schoolboy 3-years ago and my football has improved massively since.

“Mick McCarthy handed me my debut before I got injured, so he’s seen what I can do. He is the best manager I’ve played under, he has a lot of experience and I’m sure I can learn a great deal from him.”

“Personally I’ve had a great time at the Club and I’m really pleased to have been given another year.”

The 19-year-old also has international experience at youth level, having played for the Republic of Ireland Under-19’s.

His current contract with the Sunderland was due to expire on 30 June, his new contract will commence on 1 July.
