Sunderland's cup run - a nice little earner!

Sunderland's progression to the FA Cup semi finals is proving to be a 'nice little earner' in terms of the additional income gained.

The FA confirmed today that winners of this weekend's quarter finals will receive £400,000 plus an additional £265,000 for the television rights.

And the club can add to this £50,000 for their third round victory, £75,000 for the fourth-round victory and £150,000 for the fifth round win over Birmingham and £265,000 for the televised rights for the first leg of that tie - a total of £1,205,000 earned so far!

There is no prize fund for clubs in the semi finals, but 65% of the gate receipts for those games are split evenly between the four competing clubs.

But the players have agreed that they will forego any money due to them until the club's finances are back on a solid footing, and they want the money from the FA Cup run to go towards achieving financial stability. Last summer the players all agreed to defer part of their salaries to help the club deal with crippling debts, and the players unanimously agreed recently not to accept a repayment of some of the deferred money at the current time.
