Read on..
Peter spent his youth travelling the whole country watching the lads. He once went almost 8 seasons without missing a league game and only one cup game when his transport to Chester for the league cup was stolen. His knowledge and passion for both football and Sunderland AFC shine through in this book. Despite this knowledge and passion, Peter clearly knew he didn’t have the necessary qualifications to become a professional football clubs manager. He knew his applications would have to be different, he knew they would have to stand out.
Peter is a secondary school teacher who has worked in Sunderland, teaching many of you reading this now and South Yorkshire. Whilst working in Sunderland he managed Sunderland School boys for 2 years and remembers this time fondly throughout the book. Several youngsters he managed still play the game, many professionally.
The book started when Steve Bruce was sacked from our club and he sent in an application. He wrote to Drumaville explaining his love of the club understanding of the game and his vision for the club. He couldn’t believe he received a reply so then went on to apply for another vacant role, when he received a reply from this club the idea for the book was born. He decided he was going to apply for every single managers’ job when they were available. Some clubs didn’t reply to his applications, many did.
Throughout the book he receives some fantastic responses from a whole range of clubs. These include being informed he was probably too good, being congratulated for his ‘outside the box’ thinking, being rejected by text and also an actual offer of a job. The book is filled with lots of detailed football knowledge, plenty of sarcasm and clearly a whole load of Rejection. The rejection did not stop him applying again though, he even reached a stage where he decided to write to clubs asking them to sack their current managers due to the package he could bring to the clubs he was applying too.
So who did Peter apply for last? Well clearly he needed to leave one club until last, after applying for 91 league clubs and the national team there was only one team left, Newcastle United.
