Sunderland AFC announced today that the club will take part in a minute’s applause at the Stadium of Light on Saturday as it pays tribute to former goalkeeper Marton Fulop. The Hungarian passed away aged just 32, after a brave battle with cancer.
Fulop played for Sunderland for four years and spent time at Stoke City, Sunderland’s visitors at the weekend, on loan. Players, supporters and officials from both club’s will come together to commemorate his life, prior to kick off.
Margaret Byrne, chief executive, Sunderland AFC, said: “Marton was much loved by everyone at Sunderland and indeed at every club he played for. To be playing Stoke in our first home game since his terribly sad passing gives us the opportunity for both the club’s to pay tribute to him and we hope that his family will gain some comfort from the show of support.”
Marton’s parents will attend the game as guests of Sunderland AFC to witness the tribute.
